Should The MCU Bring Back Elodie Yung's Elektra Natchios?
Examining such an iconic character in the Defenderverse and beyond
The past few have been flooded with set footage from DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN, some of it might even be considered spoilers, but other revelations have confirmed details that have made fans of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen very happy.
In the latest photos and videos we have seen the return of Elden Henson as Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, which confirms our earlier report that the characters would be back to Hell’s Kitchen to be a part of Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) new home in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
But these revelations pose a new question: given that the “Defenderverse” is now canon, should they also bring back Matt’s rival/romantic partner, Elektra Natchios as well?
Elodie Yung first appeared as Elektra in the second season of Netflix’s DAREDEVIL, where she was revealed to be an ex-girlfriend of Matt Murdock from his college years at Columbia University.
Elektra came back to Matt’s life to help him battle the shadow organization known as The Hand, as they seem to have nefarious plans for New York City, and particularly Hell’s Kitchen.
Later on we learned that not only was she a protégée of Matt’s old mentor, Stick, but that she was also a mythical being called “Black Sky”, which The Hand has been searching as they believe she is the key to their immortality.
In the final battle, Elektra dies protecting Matt, but as any comic book fan knows, no one really dies in comic book stories.
After a few successful series, Marvel’s most ambitious project at the time was a team-up of their street level heroes from their Netflix series called THE DEFENDERS, and they chose The Hand as their primary antagonist.
Without going too deep into the series, The Hand managed to resurrect Elektra, and wipe out her memory. She had now truly become their most powerful weapon, the Black Sky.
During the course of the series, Elektra would start piecing together her previous life until she completely remembered Matt and the love they had for each other, but after being resurrected she had given to her darkest instincts and just like The Hand, she sought out immortality.
At the end of the season both Matt and Elektra were buried alive along with the remaining members of The Hand when a building collapsed on top of them, and although it is revealed that Matt survived, Elektra did not.
As we mentioned before, DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN is bringing back many characters and storylines from the Netflix’s series into the MCU, and I think that although Elektra has died twice in the Defenderverse already, she would make a nice addition to the MCU.
Perhaps not in the first season, but Elektra Natchios has a rich history of resurrecting in the Marvel comics, and most recently, her and Matt Murdock have been both protecting Hell’s Kitchen under the Daredevil moniker.
Maybe The Hand’s arc wasn’t handled as good before, maybe THE DEFENDERS was not as good as it should have been, but no one can deny that Charlie Cox and Elodie Yung have a powerful on-screen chemistry.
Yung was probably one of the greatest castings in the Defenderverse saga, and given resurrecting is kind of Elektra Natchios’ “thing”, I would be happy to see her fighting alongside Daredevil in the MCU in the near future.
Should Marvel Studios resurrect Elektra once again?
